MACHINIST OPERATOR

JOB SUMMARY

Use manual and or CNC Mills or Lathes to produce parts in accordance with company drawings/blueprints and instructions. Utilizes, a variety of tools such as calipers, gauges, tape measures, micrometers to take accurate measurements. Produce products that are small in nature, and must be made to close tolerances. Products are custom and therefor result in small production runs, using a variety of materials in both metal and plastic. (Aluminums, Stainless Steel, Titanium, Brass and other alloys; Plastics: Polycarbonates, Ultem, Acrylic, Peek, etc.). Deburr parts as required. Requires professional job ethics (showing up daily, on time and completing assigned shift hours).

EDUCATION :

Graduation from High School or GED, plus graduation from a technical school, an apprenticeship program, or completion of a formal four-year training program that meets the satisfaction of the Shop Supervisor and the Operations Officer, is a plus. In addition, has three years’ experience in CNC and or Manual Milling and Lathes producing parts at close tolerances.

Machinist Skills and Qualifications:

Attention to Detail, knowledge and the ability to use a variety of machines: CNC Mills and Lathes and or Manual Mills & Lathes, Drill Presses, Grinders, Saws and other tools and equipment. Knowledge skills and abilities of Machine Codes for CNC machines; ability to make code adjustments at the Machine setting is a plus, Thorough understanding of equipment and tools needed to achieve different finishes as required. Has full range of using precision measuring and gauging tools, inspecting work being performed. Knowledge of and skills to utilize all equipment in shop. Math including algebra, geometry, trig, or calculus and related formulae. Converts easily and quickly between inch and metric. Converts reading on drawings between fractions and decimals. Knowledge of the different characteristics of materials, their structural and property effects. Materials include Aluminums, Stainless Steels, Titanium, Brass and other alloys; Polycarbonates, Ultem, Acrylic, Peek, etc. Experience working with Composites a plus.

Training in programming software used by the shop for CNC machines; e.g Feature Cam, or Fusion 360

Uses knowledge, skills and ability to trouble shoot problems with work, materials and other issues. Discusses these issues with the Shop Supervisor, Engineering and others to arrive at solutions, corrections or other necessary actions as a member of the team.

Has knowledge and comprehension of necessary maintenance and repair of shop machinery and is able to discuss problems with Shop Supervisor.

Demonstrates a history of giving attention to details in performance of duties, listening carefully to others in order to be proactive in what is to be accomplished.

Ability to perform Inspections and prepare Inspection Reports and records necessary. Computer literacy is a necessity for this work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

  • Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations and setup requirements.

  • Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.

  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders and shapers.

  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input or edit computerized machine controls media.

  • Sets–up and operates CNC machine and all other equipment as needed

    • Transfer commands from servers to computer numerical control (CNC) modules, using computer network links
    • Mount, install, align, and secure tools, attachments, fixtures, and workpieces on machines, using hand tools and precision measuring instruments
    • Stop machines to remove finished workpieces or to change tooling, setup, or workpiece placement, according to required machining sequences.
    • Measure dimensions of finished workpieces to ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measuring instruments, templates, and fixtures
    • Listen to machines during operation to detect sounds such as those made by dull cutting tools or excessive vibration and adjust machines to compensate for problems, as well as monitor control panel displays and compare readings to specifications to detect malfunctions
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.

  • Deburs parts as needed to attain quality of finished parts.

  • Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications.

  • Responsible for preventive maintenance and proper usage of assigned machinery, tools, and component parts as needed

  • Follows Standard Work instructions.

  • Makes programming and mechanical adjustments upon approval of the Shop supervisor

  • May move from assigned machine to other machines at discretion of supervisor

  • Adheres to all safety and health standards
