Coin Making?

Hello, our school just purchased 3 new Haas Mini Mills. I was wondering if it is possible to make a commemorative coin for students as a project. Rough size would be 1/2 dollar size with a graduating year number and a few other items on it. Is there a tutorial on how to do something like this? Step by step for a newbie like myself? is it even possible?

Thank you for your time.

This sounds like a great idea!. What software do you guys have. Maybe someone with the same software can point you in the right direction.

I ordered my blanks from Boker Washers. They are very precise. I then used a 5C collet with emergency jaws and bored the ID to match the OD of the washer. Set the 5C collet up vertically.

This is a 1.250 Diameter x .065" thick 6061 washer, cost about $1.25 each from Bokers.

Hello Michael,

Currently we have Autodesk Inventor and I think we are going to get Mastercam software also
Possibly Solidworks

We have the Autodesk Sweet so if there is something else in there also.

instead of scribing on the coin blank itself wouldn’t I want to make a die blank to then somehow smash out coins for future use?

@AaronCzarnecki depending on the material you use it will require a lot of pressure to press a coin.
Here is a discussion on that topic in the Practical Machinist forum.

I really like this idea over the coin blank and pressing mentioned below. Maybe you can make a bunch of them ahead of time with what you want to have on it. Or make that part a sub program, then make it part of a project to personalize them with something.
I still have my desk pen holder I made in 7th grade. When its personalized its kept longer maybe.
They don’t have to be 1.25 in diameter maybe 3 inch. What ever is easiest for workholding. This also makes in cost sustainable over time.
