Hello from Mississippi

Small introduction in hopes of assistance thru the learning process! I’m 41 years old graduate of Meridian Community College AA in Machine Shop Technology in 1997 and two year certificate in Drafting and Design in 1999. At that time our school had no CNC machines and 3D modeling was something only the largest of largest manufacturers had the time and energy to do. I never held a job as a machinist as CAD really grabbed my interest. Thru the years I have designed many types of machines, site work and General Construction Estimator to currently using Tekla creating Pre-engineered Metal Buildings from paper to construction drawings.
BUT… that all doesn’t seemingly matter now. I recently suffered an “Eye Stroke” and lost my vision in my left eye. At first that might not sound like an issue until you think about the requirements of the daily life of a Detailer / 3D modeler. Before the vision loss I worked minimum 55-60hrs a week 8-12hrs starring into 3 monitors creating buildings only stopping for two 15min break’s and 1 hour long break. (Typically worked straight thru.) Now days my one good eye seems to only hold out for 3-4 hours before I start getting bad floaters or it just quits focusing. We are holding out hope that I can regain some vision so that I can once again be valuable employee.
None the less I love designing and manufacturing mechanical items and couldn’t imagine not doing it. As stated earlier, thru all of my employment I have only used 2D CAD. Started using Autocad back when it was still DOS and a digitizer. As I sit here and type I have downloaded Fusion 360 and feel as if I’m in 1st grade all over again!!

It is my goal to learn how to operate Fusion 360, 3D printing and CNC manufacturing. In the end would be to have my own business capable of supporting my family and eventually others and their families.

Sorry for the short story but it is what it is and honestly, I don’t have a clue what I’m going to do! All I know is CAD and this is the only thing I can think of. I can only assume I never shinned as a great leader or manager as no one else has offered any other solutions. So please don’t hesitate to offer advise and if I come across as arrogant or rude it’s not intended.

Thank you,
Joshua Jones

@JoshuaJones welcom to The Forum I admire your well with all and hope that you’ll be fine!

Thank you,

This Fusion 360 is driving me bonkers… I couldn’t even figure out how to pull dimensions and modify. Since the 90’s I have been using CAD but this is something different. I thought the switch from Autodesk to Tekla was bad, this is just painful! LoL

I’m scared to ask how to create borders, BOM’s and is there a paper and model space anymore???

I’m kind of new to Fusion 360 also only use it when I have to. I do the just of my programming at the control. I do recommend that you go through the Titan Building Block series. It will help you learn how to do lots and lots of different things with the fusion 360. I need to go back over them a few times myself and sharpen my skills. I find myself getting stomped and have to make a post ask how to do this or that. If you have some more questions. I would recommend you create a new post on Facebook it generally gets an immediate response within a few minutes.

Fusion 360 is primarily a modeling software, I would not recommend it if you are trying to create engineering drawings. It will create a drawing, but it is cumbersome IMHO. Just use your sketch skills then either extrude them, join them or cut them. The mouse right click will be your best friend. As Rumpelstiltskin mentioned, go thru the building block series, it will provide you the basic modeling skills necessary to learn even more advance modeling techniques. YouTube is great, tutorials by AutoDesk are extensive - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbSkwvZyU_0 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4DU-gp6AaE

I have been watching tutorials and they have been great! I just have to get my workstation setup to minimize distractions and spend time with the program.
