Hey Everyone,
I just started my shop and pulled the name the other day. I am the only person working on my machine that I just bought with my life savings.
Today I got a letter in the mail from MIOSHA telling me I need to create and submit to them a safety manual and $295.00
The letter states it is for employee’s… I am the owner and there are no employee’s at this point. So I was jist leaning towards ignoring it…
Thoughts?

I would contact MIOSHA for free help to setup your business to match the Michigan’s standards for businesses having metalworking machinery. Even though you are one person, your shop must have registered with the State for a business name. Most likely any business regardless of size that operates certain types of processes are required to have a safety manual, post bulletins that are visible in the shop, etc. In addition, you will need to post the Fed OSHA guidelines as well any DOL posters that are required in any business. Here is the link for small business help by MIOSHA - LEO - Employer Assistance (michigan.gov)
BTW - the $295 fee does not sound right for submitting a safety manual… They may have a small business grant that will waive whatever that fee is intended for. Sorry, I do not know more about this fee. Here is the standards of an employer’s responsibility if running metalworking machinery. Note it states Employer which means the business.

Thanks for your input… So anoying. I don’t even have electrical setup yet…
There are companies that solicit OSHA and DOL posters for a fee. You can get those posters for free. Make sure it was from MIOSHA and not someone else.

The bureaucracy MUST be fed. Somewhere, in that government of yours is an individual or group of individuals justifying their existence that you must of course pay for with YOUR hard earned money.
Personally, I’d send 'em that money… in pennies. And that manual… hand written in sanskrit.
