Does anyone know what would be the best face mill for aluminum and harder materials such as steel, and if super fly cutter would be a better option considering the cost of the tools, cycle time, tool life, surface finish…?
Kennametal Stellram for aluminum
I suppose it depends on your machine, the part you are facing, and the speed you need to get it done among other things. On my little Tormach, I use a superfly for facing operations because it doesn’t have the horsepower to do a comparable-sized cut with a face mill. On the VF2, we have a couple of face mills set up with different geometry and coatings for the appropriate materials.
Have you looked that the model offered in the kit that Kennemetal has for the Academy? If you provided more details about what your needs are perhaps people could give a better answer.
Best wishes,

Like Tom said it deoends on a lot of variables. If you have a tooling supplier that you work with or certain tools that you work with contact that supplier or better yet the manufacturer to get the info about which tool, inserts, S&F that would work best with your machine and materials.
