Can you get great results if you do 2D adaptive facing op with an end mill vs a face mill? What would be an appropriate size end mill to 2D adaptive face 8x16 aluminum stock using a Haas Super MiniMill 2?
Thanks

Best thing to do is use a Facemill… and Go to 2D Facemill and it will easily do it.
Never tried but I guess a endmills would do it and of course the larger the better, but there will be a ton of lines…
You could also program a pocket at Z 0
Or a contour with a multiple step over
Titan, thanks for the reply.
When it comes to facemills and Cat40 holder, I get a bit overwhelmed with whats available. For a Super Mini Mill 2 what would be the appropriate size, 2-2.5"? Speed is not important, surface finish is important, machining C145 Tellurium Copper and 6061. Budget around $1k for nice combo. Can you recommend a combination?
Facemill brand and cat#?
Insert cat#?
Holder brand and cat#?
Edit: My local supplier Western Tool in Livermore does not carry Kennametal, if you recommend Kennametal can you also recommend a source.
Thanks for the help!
The Face mill is the best way to go. I’ve asked that very same question. The endmill. will leave machining marks all over the face of the part not to mention add machine time. The only benefit is less tool changes but the ad machine time and the unsightly makes quickly negates that.
MCS carries Kennametal or you can go right to the Kennametal site.

Darroll, thanks for the links, but this is where I get lost with all the options for facemill and insert geometry.
Don’t feel bad. I am a quality guy, a CMM programmer. LOL So although this isn’t completely new but new none the less. I will say this, Kennametal is what my shop uses for everything.
Okay, so here are two Kennametal Shell Mills:
Which is better? Both are similar cost. The KSS seems like you can use all 4 sides of the insert?

What would be the correct CAT40 holder for these?

Or something better?
Machine is a 2017 Haas SuperMiniMill2 with probing
Any feedback would be a great help, thanks!
Edit:
What about AB Tools Shear Hog SH200-3/4, 2" dia with 3/4 shank seems to be a bargain for what it is and can use existing holders I already have.

Just go through MSC. Did you see the video where I ran the Shell Mill at 800IPM? It’s on my YouTube channel. Well I listed the tool and insert used and it’s Awesome. I use the 2” Dia for smaller parts and small machines and the 3” for larger machines.
AB Tool is a good Cutter but it’s a rougher only, meaning the inserts don’t match perfectly and it’s listed as a rougher… I have many of them.
The StellRam I listed in the video is a Beast for roughing and finishing.
You also can go over to Building Blocks and look at the tool list… T1 is the same StellRam
Yessir, watched the 800IPM, crazy!
If I go with a 2-2.5" version what would be the appropriate tool holder? I cannot figure the right size pilot hole length, it is listed as “MCD Overrides” on the print. Sorry for the newb q’s just getting overwhelled with all the options.
3" FACE MILL 4 (KENNAMETAL) MM# 5673338
MILLING INSERT 4 (KENNAMETAL) MM# 5665949
That’s what we are hear for. To help to share and to encourage.
I ordered these from MSC today, first shell mill so hopefully it all works out.
I called Kennametal and he directed me through a online maze to their (erickson) tool holder but MSC indicated India as a orgin, so I went with Parlec, hopefully it works togetrher.
