Hey all!
I currently work at a machine shop and one day plan to start and own my own shop but am curious about everyone’s opinion. I currently at work at a shop and am a “jack of all trades” i have been trained to run vertical mills, horizontal mills, the cmm, and am know learning lathes. I am supposed to leave to go train for a water jet when we get one.
I am curious when owning a business would it be better to master certain areas or know how to run everything well enough to get jobs done in a sufficient and timely manner?
Any insight would be appreciated.
Thank you all and have a good day.
Like the old saying goes " The more you know the more valuable you are." As a Owner/Operator you should be well rounded in your trade. One biggest reason is so you can hire a less experienced uy to save you money when you 1st start off your business. That way your not paying top dollar right away, but I have seen some shops pay that top dollar right off the bat.
It is not important to know everything but to know were to get the information to get things dun.
Jack of all Trades and a Master of none. Had to use that quote but yes its good to have a vase knowledge about the industry but no one will know everything. Of course there are a few that think so haha.
Started my own shop 6 years ago after working in different shops for over 30 years. You don’t need to know everything, but you need to be willing to. A lot of surprises along the way. Be prepared to put in a lot of hours. I am a one man show and love it!
