Hope it goes well for him!!! Bring home the gold for Oklahoma! Is the contest still mostly manual code assembly, or have they added CAM to it?

Manual coding, but they may be offering a CAM competition soon. If you compete in the AMT, it will use CAD/CAM. You have to model, CAM and setup machine and run part. It is a three man team effort. Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT)

How did the contest go yesterday? I know you don’t have the results yet, but did they run his part? How was the written test? I know that they keep adding more GD&T to it each year. Hopefully he’ll get called up on stage tonight!

SkillslUSA held a great contest, well organized and fair to all competitors. It was my first rodeo to the Nationals and I was impressed. My student felt pretty good about the theory, PMI, interview, but he ran into a snafu on the coding. The part he worked on did not have any features he had not programmed before and he normally would find it quite routine, but he got stumped on an error code regarding G2 got focused so much on his IJ data, it was long into the time before he realized he forgot to follow the G2 statement with a G1. It rattled him, and he does not know how well he did the rest. I told him it happens to everyone, something simple can foul things up. We look forward to closing ceremony tonite.

It most certainly is an accomplishment to get to Nationals!!! I’m glad that he was well prepared going into it… and he might have done better than he thought! In previous years everyone was worried about how they did on the test, so it sounds like he got that down, which should help his score. G01 after a G02 will still catch me, but he should be well prepared for a job… Which is the point right?

You are right, I am very proud of his accomplishments and his ability. We all make those mistakes, even the most experienced will sometimes overlook the obvious while seeking a solution. He was well prepared and represented our State as one of the best. He will make someone a fine employee and asset.

Oklahoma won Silver in CNC Turning Specialist, my student won Silver at State, it will make him excited that he was so close to winning State and would have been competitive at Nationals

awesome job for sure to make it there. I wished i had machining in my life at an earlier age. No matter who you are you will hit walls, but its what you do after that wall that will determine who you are in life.

Is this similar to VICA competition’s? I was once VICA president at my college and had the best time just going around to each competition supporting our teammates.

Yes, very similar! I would suspect that VICA did not have a CNC component thought

I remember one of the simplest issues became the largest stumbling block. Our Machine Shop competitors had never used Metric machine’s! They had become accustom to SAE and right off the bat they was hit with the big surprise! Hide sight it wasn’t a big issue but add the pressure of competition and it became a giant stumbling block!
