Hi everyone,
I’m not really active in this Forum but trying to be.
My name is Victor and I’m a Lead CNC Programmer for a shop in Orlando, FL. They are considering me to be promoted to Machine Shop Manager. This is not a mom&pop shop but now a Corporate company.
I’m wondering a few things:
- What kind of percentage or annual bump in pay should I receive?
- What should be my 1st step as manager?
- Has anyone gone through this process?
Any tips helps!
Thanks!

Congratulations on the promotion! This is an excellent topic and I have forwarded it on to our Executive Team for their review.
I encourage shop owners to connect with you on this post and provide you with their insights.

Historically, you may not see a large significant pay increase, more likely you will see some nicer benefits. If you were working lots of overtime as a lead, you may even see a decrease in gross, especially if they place you on salary. This can be a great opportunity and the one thing I have seen my skilled trades people struggle with when promoted to a managerial position, was they lacked training to be managers. Many times a company will lose one of the happy best workers and end up with someone not liking their new job. I recommend you find some online courses focused on managing people, managing time, managing budgets (an accounting course would be nice). You will probably no longer finding yourself working on the machines, but putting out employee fires and being asked to do things you are not familiar with at first. Be receptive, it may be a little culture shock if you have not been managing people, schedules and time as a lead person.

I did that step some years ago, but managing people isn’t in my nature, and i went back.
it’s a big move from technical to psycological situation every day.
Good luck!

Yes this is a 1st time and will be something new to me.
I believe I have the personality to take on the task but time will tell! I have my final interview today with HR and negotiating salary so lets see what happens!
Thanks for replying!
Got ya!
Hopefully it’s something for me but only time will tell and I won’t know until I try!
Thanks!
Good luck, it may prove to be a great opportunity. Time will tell, one thing you will not lose your technical know-how and can always return to the operational occupation versus the managerial.
