Lathe burr

How’s it going everyone? I have a question and not sure if I should post it here. I’m running some tubing at work and when the part off tool comes up it’s leaving a big burr/ extra stock. Any ideas on how to get rid of it? We tried to peck it or just straight cut off. Didnt really change. Thank you in advance

try using a parting insert with a 7° or greater angled face right or left hand will depend on your particular tooling/lathe. Read more here: Parting Off – Part 4: Grooving with Neutral Versus ‘Handed’ Cutting Edge - Practical Machinist : Practical Machinist.

Thank you! I’ll give it try. I’ll let my buddy know.

Try this… Either use a thinner cuttoff tool or instead of cutting it off last in your process you can do what I call a “poor man part catcher”.

It’s where you groove out the tube BEFORE you drill about .005 or .01 smaller then drill dia… Then drill the part until the drill catches the part. Only down side is opening and shutting door 4 ea part… Unless you make a ROBUST drop off jig.

Then add a face cut to remover excess. While the part is on the drill give her a twist by hand to cut into the burr l& et the flutes of the drill cut out the bur.

If your not drilling and it’s tube stock slow your feed towards near center of cuttoff to like .001 per rev

I would be using a kennametal “Top Notch” .05 wide insert on those if i were you. Would save a ton of metal too. Might need to relieve the insert a bit at the neck but if you give it a peck and coolant right before it reaches tube center it should cut clean… Them big burs are the result of heat and pressure…
