Machine Definitiion

Good afternoon,
I am now programming with Mastercam and Fusion 360. My question is this… Do I really need to build a machine definition to write programs and to dry run or its better to have a machine definition?

In Fusion, until recently I never used a machine definition or simulation, so in answer I would say it is not necessary for most conventional work, if you are working some deep pocket, multi axis work and are concerned with interference or collisions, then it may be useful.

I agree with @StephenHadwin I see that simulating parts in a vice can be helpful but I don’t even believe that is necessary depending on your skill level. I’ve had or I can simulate in the machine but I didn’t ever find it necessary. I could see if you were doing some complicated five axis or multi-axis turning it could be extremely helpful.

Hi Darrol,
I don’t believe you have to build a machine definition. I also believe Mastercam has a library you can choose from if you choose to do so. Your Mastercam reseller would be a great resource. Mine in our area has helped me a lot. I still like to use simulation just to look at the tool paths in Mastercam no matter how simple part is.
