Tool Re-Numbering confusion

I am coming from a strictly manual tool change environment…Hence my question.

When tools are inserted into the Haas Carousel presumably there is a shop standard…In other works in position 1 there will always be a facing mill, in position 2 there will always be a 1/2" end mill, etc… This standard varies for each shop, i.e. Titan may do it one way, NYCNC may do it another way, Grismo knives may do it another way.

In several of the CAM examples one of the very last steps is to renumber the tools. Is it safe to say that the Tool Number assigned in the software has nothing to do with the tool number in the carousel of the Haas? If so how does it know which tool to grab during the tool change? Is this magic handled in the post-processor?

NO what ever tool the program calls the tool changer will bring that tool up.
As to standard tools assigned to a pocket yes some shops do that. But as you can imagine that can be difficult and a Job Shop atmosphere as you never know what particular tool you will be using you may not even use a face mill. You may need to have your Carousel full of tools that are not in your standard list. I hope this helps explain some.

It sorta helps…I need to wrap my mind around Automatic Tool change vs what I currently have to do which is Fast Tool Change. I have my tools lined up how I will use them…My machine pauses, request a tool-change…I manually make the change and it touches off against a known hard surface to determine the Z travel distance. Because I am not a production shop I use the Fusion Setup Feature to print out the list of tools/operations. It’s very slow and tedious and definitely not something I would want to do in a more-than-one or many environment when tolerances and accuracy is imperative.

No tool changer for me eather.

You would be surprised. I have a friend just bought a 80k mill and tool off the tool setter to make room on the table to make parts.

Mine is much more basic even than that. I basically have a CNC router but the same principles apply…Most of what I am doing these days is not a 4’ x 8’ sheet of Richlite but instead aluminium. I am jones-ing for a Hass Mini Mill as it will be a much better fit for the operations.

At around 51:35 in the first example for CAM operations Titan talks about re-numbering the tools…So I think the bottom line is that the T1 tool in the library must match T1 in the carousel. My tool library is completely custom as I make use of some bits that may or may not be availabe in the machining world…At times I have to make use of profile bits which at times can have odd bottom and side profiles.

Your Cam system is able to renumber your tools to whatever you desire, perhaps what is in the machine tool changer already. Most job shops will not keep tools in the machine carousel and continuously program tools starting with T1 … However, I like to dedicate a few tools to my machine carousel, such as 1’’ and 2’’ facemills, 3/8’’ x 90 spotdrill, .375, .500,.750 roughers and finishers. These tools are used often on jobs. My Cam system remembers these tools and where they are in machine. Example: I dedicate the last 8-10 tool pockets for these tools.

I would just take it upon myself and dedicate my tooling that I use more often on most jobs. Then maybe your boss will see all of a sudden your knocking out more work than everyone else. He might come to you ,and ask what you are doing differently. Some times you have to be bold ,and make a move most people won’t. I have done this on dedicating tools, simplifying setups, rearrange tools in a program, and other things and some go unnoticed. But when it does come out your saved time or cut some cost, and the company finally notices it that won’t raise hell if they are smart.

Hello All!
William check out these two videos, this one is as explanation of the umbrella type tool changer and the side mount tool changer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIQt--72k1E. This video is presetting a side mount tool carousel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjRACstFxNE. Hopefully this will be helpful. Now if I am correct the machine knows what tool number is in what tool carousel pocket number even though tool one is not in carousel pocket one. Titan is actually renumbering the order in which he wants each tool to run in the program in that order. If I am wrong please correct me on this.
