Hello,
I’m curious if anyone has a Fusion 360 recipe or tips on roughing larger diameter faces. Typically when we would manually machine these, you would fade out at the end of each cut, otherwise the chip curls up against the face and it prevents it from breaking off. These long tight chips have a tendency to break the insert. The other technique is to turn and stop short of the dimensional shoulder and then to turn down the face, as is shown in this Sandvik video (time 2:02).
I’ve been unable to determine a strategy in Fusion to allow the tool to thin the chip before it reaches the end of the cut. Please note that this isn’t the same as pecking/breaking the chip during the cut length, it’s an issue when the tool gets close to the taller face and curls up.
Thanks!
I think I understand your need. I played with the lead out variables and got this result… Is this what you were looking for? https://autode.sk/2wxoKK5
In the passes tab, there is a check box called “No Dragging” that stops short of the face like in the sandvik video. But instead of facing it after all the OD roughing, it roughs the OD shy from the face then faces the remaining portion, then on to the next OD stepover.

@StephenHadwin @erikgonzalezcnc I’m only seeing the “no dragging” and the lead in/out options in the finishing pass. Do I take it to understand that in this instance, you would rough the part using the finishing strategy?
Thanks,
Nick
You post was about roughing passes, not finishing.
The “No Dragging” is in roughing. I created a cast to show you the differance and locatin of the option.

@erikgonzalezcnc Thank you for the screencast. I’m so sorry about this, but I am totally missing something. I don’t see those options in my roughing and finishing profiles. Your’s doesn’t look the same as mine. Am I missing a setting somewhere? See this screencast for what I see:
Roughing and Finishing options
I see what you mean. The new version of Fusion360 has updated toolpaths and simplified the Profile Roughing pass. I use a template of my OD roughing from a Master turing profile I have so that one still have the old unsimplified passes. I have taken another quick casting to show the differance between the old and new passes. And I have also uploaded my personal master template so you can try it out.
Just upload it to your own templates folder and I believe it should be available.
Hopfully that helps.

@Nick_Burdick my screencast was focused on the linking tab of the roughing profile, not the passes tab, if that is what you were asking about not finding. I watched your screencast and it only showed passes variables
@StephenHadwin Unfortunately, I think the Fusion 360 Team did the same thing with the linking tab. See these screenshots. The lead in/out is there for a finishing profile, but not the roughing.
It was an interesting choice for the fusion team. Looks like they are trying to bring it back in soon:

@erikgonzalezcnc Thanks for the template, that works like a charm!! I’ll be sure to use that until Autodesk brings back some of the more powerful turning features. The linking options are all there too!
Strange, I have the latest updates, have different choices for my turning rough cycle process. My version is 2.0.7463
The No Dragging is present, has been for a month.
@Nick_Burdick Its a good thing it did! I use all my template and have them set up the way I want it so I never really noticed the option missing on new toolpaths. The template was before the past few months’ update so it does have a lot more options in the tabs.
@StephenHadwin Its not stange but you are correct; hasn’t been in there for months. I have the latest version too. Fusion updates talked about some improvements to OD turning and other stuff. I didn’t really read the updates since I work off templates. From scratch, a new toolpath does not have the “No Dragging” option, but from my old template it does.
Hopfully everything goes well and this problem is solved!***
@StephenHadwin Really weird… I’m on the same version, just checked. Admittedly, I’m on a Mac, maybe that has something to do with it. When I pick a turning roughing cycle, I can’t see the “No Dragging” or any lead in/out on the linking tab. I wonder if there is a setting that can be adjusted to make it visible?
Well, I hate mysteries, So, yes my Fusion 360 was updating, but my roughing process I used on this part retained whatever process I used at that time way back when. The processes do not update or change from prior updates. It appears full functionality and edit is still available, and yes you can copy this process to another part as @Nick_Burdick mentioned earlier. Very interesting… Sorry for any confusion I may have caused thinking the No Drag and lead out variables were available in current update.
