Online Learning - Covid 19 shutdown

Hello all,

I was curious what other CTE instructors were doing during this time of shutdown. I teach junior/senior high school students. All of assignments have to be done Google Classroom. I am thinking of having the junior students watch the videos as most students wont have the opportunity to download Fusion 360 at home. Just curious as to what others are doing during this difficult time.

Stay Safe Everyone

We are slated to start up virtual classes on April 6th , will meet tomorrow (virtually) as instructors and admin to determine roll out for online instruction… All of our students have school emails, including full Office 365 suite, which has MS Teams. So the plan is to use Teams for virtual instruction versus Zoom. We were using Canvas LMS to deliver our content, so not much of a challenge to redirect some of the content to Teams. Canvas altered their platform so Teams is inclusive for sign on. You can sign on in Office and have access to the Canvas account. I am concerned my students may not all have access to a computer or internet (we are a rural community), but I will continue to deliver the theory, I will be able to fetch some Haas simulators, so students can program and send to me to verify. I will continue to work with those students than can access Fusion at home and work on the Titan projects. It will be challenging

I added to my Google classroom - Haas CNC Certification - free online - I stop short and decline the hands on test at the end. I ask for a screenshot of the last 3 sections to verify they completed.

also Edge factor has some great career path videos - I made it an assignment - to pick a career path and write a one page report and submit via google class.

Thanks Ed,
I saw the HAAS Certification the other day. I havent seen that before. So when you say you decline the hands on testing is that something you have to select when you set it up? Edge Factor we a lot in the classroom as group discussions. Good idea though implementing it and have them do a written response.

Hi Stephen,
We too are in a rural area, some with already low income families, now parents are losing their jobs. Today our school was taking computers out to homes that were in need and didn’t have a computer in the home. I am not sure what you mean by MS Teams though.
We are finishing up our first week of online learning. It has been a little challenging for sure.

I would love to be able to get the students up and going with Fusion that aren’t already using it.

No Its at the end, I wanted to see if a student would receive some documentation - But no - just a Congrats video and do you wan to set up a test. So I did a screen shot of my last 4 modules. I have a test student in my class - which is my Dogs name Pokey Doherty. So I submitted that screen shot. I just got a webcam 30 mins ago and now testing that out using OBS free screencast but now to add me in the corner. I can make an Mp4 and load it on Google Classroom for them to view

So the students do not receive any special type of certification then from HAAS? Huh. Maybe its based on them doing the “hands on test” then?
For the “Certification”

Yes, for the time being. Several of us are petitioning to allow the HTEC educators act as evaluators. Fingers crossed.

MS Teams is a Microsoft Office 365 app that is similar to Zoom meetings. A little more difficult, but also offers more options for a multi person virtual meeting.

Hi Stephen. What do your courses consist of? Or some page to enter? I’m from Argentina, that’s why I ask.
Greetings.

Hey guys I have been using G-Wizard for some time now. I have 25 seats for student use but they also offer a 30 day trail. It works pretty well for the student when they are learning to G-Code or proofing a program. They can create a program and email or share on Google classroom with me as well. I also use Newsela to break things up a little. It has relevant articles that I assign. The students will read and then activities to do at the end. Check out Career Safe as well, its an online OSHA 10 class for $25 a student. They have opened up some other course offerings as well for free. This is our 3rd week and I will say I’m not built for this. I’m a lets get to lab show you type of instructor. Thanks for sharing.
