Taking it to the tolerance

Hey guys,

First of all, I want to thank You for the awesome work you are doing. I am your great fan!

I have question regarding Aerospace Academy, TITAN 509 LM, milling operation (step 8) in particular.

Everything is displayed in a pic down here. When Stuart is programing finishing of internal pocket, he is putting stock to leave on walls value of -0,0015. Isn´t this gonna make pocket with dimmension 1.003? I was trained to always aim at the middle of tolerance field, which in this case would be pocket with 1,0015 inch. It should be safer to not approach the margins.

Thanks a million for Your answer!

Thank you for posting your question! You’re correct! This is a non-traditional technique we use when machining tough/difficult materials.

The “stock to leave value” was intentional because the material’s resistance will deflect the small diameter of the endmill and will cause the dimension to be under print.

But since we over-compensated the tolerance on the end mill, we can achieve the correct size of the pocket while cutting the material.
