Good Morning! - I pray this finds everyone well this holiday season. Please remember Jesus is the reason. Ok this is my first post, please be kind if you can.
That out of the way has anyone got an easy solution for holding the 1-18 3" Shell Mill on low HP machines like the Tormach PCNC 440?
Background:
I recently purchased the ACADEMY TOOLKIT: TITAN BUILDING BLOCKS MILL SERIES, and I am working to create some structured workflow here at the Asylum. So while I have a lot of “very bad machine shop habits” and some ability to “get things done”, I really am very excited about a more structured setup, and something that would be easy to teach to other members of my staff. Enter Titan Building Blocks. Issue
The 3" shell mill uses a 1" arbor and is definitely designed for higher HP machines. I know that there is alternate shell mills and the M1 Tormach even references options. But what I really want to do is find an arbor /solution that lets me hold the shell mill that came with my kit … any ideas would be appreciated… maybe I am wrong but even a TTS blank turned down to 1" ?? Is there any reason this is a bad idea? we have an ATC so ideally I would like this on a TTS holder… I found an R8 to 1" arbor… but that is a manual tool change that introduces other issues… TIA!!!
You could make an adaptor I’ve done that. Looks like your tts has a .5 hub you can adapt it but as you know it will mabe a bolt sleeve Also. I think a 3" face mill would be hard to use on that mill. Not enough torque. You might consider going to ebay or Amazon and find a smaller one that fits your tool holder. Will the 3" cause clearance issues in your turret? An other option would be buying face mill from Tormach 38258 - TTS SuperFly Cutter Kit
Sorry for the delay i posted your question in the Facebook Titans of CNC page hoping someone with your machine would come here and post something to help.
Good morming, id hate to be the bearer of bad news but none of the tormach machines can run a 3" facemill. The 440 is the least powerful and you should go with a superfly. I wish they added something that said not for tormachs. The 1/2" endmill may give you some problems too
If you cannot locate a shell mill arbor that matches the supplied Kennametal facemill, it would not be hard to make your own adapter. If you only use one insert and slow the feed rate down to match the one tooth, there should be enough HP to run the tool.
