Good day to you all,
I’m aware that Titan is using Autodesk Fusion 360 to teach CAD/CAM.
It’s great that the software is free, but who uses Fusion 360 professionally?
All I see in my area are job postings requiring Mastercam, Gibbscam, NX, and other lesser known one’s like surfcam, bobcad etc… I have yet to see Fusion 360 in a job posting.
How well does fusion cross over to other cam systems if any of you guys know?
Thanks and have a good day.

My brother in law uses Fusion daily at work. I stepped up to Inventor HSM, but now to get Inventor you have to buy a whole package of other stuff. Inventor and Fusion are the same to me with just a few differences but really make the same toolpaths. I have been using it for almost 2 years, and also have a seat in MasterCam. I love the Autodesk Product way better because its 10 times faster to get things done drawing, and tool paths wise. Most companies won’t stray away from what they know, and used for years. I gave them a side by side comparison between the 2, and what I could do speed wise and such.

Well I use Fusion 360 to cam my projects in the shop professionally.

I am pretty certain that Titan uses Fusion 360 for much of his work outside of the education modules. I notice a lot of users (those who do not use Fusion 360) harp on how it does not match up. I have used a host of other CAM programs and have not found Fusion 360 incapable of doing what the more expensive packages do. IMHO it had a better value per $ than most. I always tell my students that “can’t” is a four letter word we shall not use in class.

I use it everyday to design automation equipment and machining. Does everything I need it to. Once we get into 5 axis we’ll probably have to upgrade but…

I use it at my current shop for the Haas toolroom mill. Mainly because I had the seat they only have BobCAD. I also looking into using it to program our Amada laser because I hate the Amada software. I really think Fusion is as capable or more than Master CAM and is only slightly behind Cam works and NX. And I have used all of them.

Only thing I have ran into is programming Wire EDM that is the reason we have Inventor and MasterCam at my shop.

I have programmed 5-axis simultaneous in Fusion, but nothing in 4 axis wire. I feel I could possibly program it though if I tried. Feels like a challenge to myself, can I program with Fusion a 4 axis program.

I have done 4th axis, and its not that hard really.

When I used to program Wire EDM I used ESPRIT, Feature CAM, or Fanuc’s Software. I could never really get MasterCAM or NX to run the paths right. I may not have given them a fair enough chance though since I learned how to hand code the G-code for a Wire EDM when I started almost 20 years ago; and knew what I wanted the code to do.

4 AXIS Wire IS actually not as complicated as it sounds. As a test when I was learning I had to code a square to a Circle long hand. Really you just have to remember that x and y become u and v. Also that most Wires can not surpass 17 degrees in the taper cut with a large flush cup.

Well, trying to program 4 axis for Wire turned out to be a dud. I could program either the xy or the uv, but not able to sync the two. It was two programs. I could then manually edit and cut and paste, but that defeats the whole purpose of doing it in Fusion 360. FeatureCam does it okay, found an AutoDesk Forum request to add wire to Fusion so I voted yes. Maybe enough votes they will move it up on their priority list.

Our Wire EDM has been down since i started but getting worked on this week. So I will have some learning coming very soon. I have no issues with XY or UV I understand each fine from doing lathe work using U and V for taper. Now there are other things I know I’m going to be learning making these Die Blocks doing die life and such.

can you program 4th axis to cut simultaneously 3d so you can cut a profile like a chess piece or a head?

If the machine is capable, the answer is Yes.

Well ok can you share or is it a secret. I have done it in Mastercam but have yet t find anything on what strategy to use in Fusion 360. a hint of where to look may help

John is pretty awesome he is doing a Johnny 5 full scale Robot in stages. If you guys like some good informational videos NYCNC is a great channel. He started his business with no knowledge all self taught very smart guy. Has a great podcast also Business of Machining.

I watched that video and that is doing pockets. Tanke that same concept and instead of spline. make it humps and valleys no sharp corners. and make it do a 3d cut as it is spinning on the 4th axis. make it do actual 3d 4th axis cutting.where it moves in the z and rotates at the same time. what John was doing was 2d pockets.
Yes its the same concept basically
