I have a brand new Haas TL-1 Lathe with the Next Gen Control. I an brand new to CNC lathe. Does anyone know how to set up the tool and work offsets?
Congrats on the new machine! @StephenHadwin gave you a great resource to use, also watch the Titans of CNC Acedemy Lathe series, it will also be helpful to getting you set up, and help get you going.
Congratulations on the new machine may it surve you well!
Stephen, Thank you very much. Would you happen to have any instruction on how to set the work offsets properly?
I found this that might be helpful… It is not a TL-1 but process will be similar

Stephen,
Thanks I will take a look. Just trying to get it all figured out. Don’t want to crash a new machine.
Thanks you for all your help. I hope I am not bothering anyone with these beginner questions.
Just trying not to make a huge mistake….
We were all beginners once. When I bought my first CNC I just had to do a lot of reading and trial and error.
Welcome and we all started somewhere that is for sure. Ok YouTube will be a good spot to search for videos.
Now this is a basic video that hits everything slow going but detailed.
Great basics for the TL-1. Not having run one, I like the approach of single axis zero return… Makes sense. It is a little slow, so patience is needed, but I believe it has great instruction after viewing it. Good find @MikeJones86
Thanks @StephenHadwin I started out 10 years ago programming a TL2 at the control with no experience. Now 10 years later I can’t believe what I have accomplished and still going after. Also, that machine is still running most of my programs still to this day.
Thanks guys for all the help. The TL-1 is running like a champ now.
glad to hear your making chips again
Greetings! I am learning to make parts on the TL1 myself. For what it’s worth, I discovered that when you set the z-face and diameter offsets, the Program (G54) coordinates DO NOT immediately update. So, you need to do a T101 tool change (via MDI or program) and then the control will display the correct work coordinates. I don’t know if other gcode commands or moves will also do the same thing.
“Invested” a couple of hours trying to figure this out. The good news, I guess, is that no one in my shop will make that mistake EVER again. Phew!
this is a good quick guide

the G54 offset is different on a Lathe than the Mill. Fanuc controlled machine call it Z shift. and that’s more accurate. We never shift the X axis on a 2 axis CNC lathe - all geometry is set with Tool offset - then you only shift in Z axis for longer of shorter parts.
If you are manually setting tools you need to take your primary tool and touch face for Z “zero” Tool offset. then do the same for diameter but the goal is to have that tool aligned with the center of the spindle. after you do Tool 1 then the other tools need to align to center of spindle and the same Z zero position. Drills need to me on center of X zero center of spindle.
