Five Axis Status!

Good afternoon to everyone here,
I saw where Titan posted a new 5 axis project. Will there be more to follow? Also, I have a part that I am not sure how to set up. If I use a conventional CNC, it will be at least three setups. For something that would take three setups, wouldn’t it be better to setup using 5 axis if available?

Yes it can be better, a lot of 5 axis work can turn a semi complex part into a 2 OP job. Great for lower production runs.

5 axis has both pros and cons

  1. if machined in one setup, less likely features and dimensions get skewed due to a 2nd or 3op fixture. Maintaining datum integrity is a big plus, reliability of holding dimensions is improved.
  2. Negatives - (1) 5-axis machine is more expensive, so shop rate should be higher for using this machine (2) if time of deliver is important for production parts, sometimes breaking up parts to multiple operations reduces finished part time. I need to get 10 parts out today, but 5-axis cycle time is 3 hrs, whereas running the part in 3 machines, each having a 1 hr cycle time to complete, I will finish job in 5 hours.
So to respond to your answer, it will all depend on the part if 5 axis is better.

@StephenHadwin excellent response! Beyond just the part, all the requirements need to be assessed in order to determine the best strategy for manufacturing.

@DarrollHough to answer your question regarding more to follow, I am certain that @Titan will use the same structure his team has for the other projects:

  1. Learn the CAD
  2. Learn the CAM
  3. Machine the part.

It is a proven methodology that works!

Our curriculum is based on four areas of manufacturing: Designing, Programing, Machining, and Inspecting Parts, @DarrollHough.

Each series is designed to take you through the first three steps. Our current focus is the completion of the Building Blocks and The Rocket. With 5-Axis and others to follow!

It’s safe to say our production schedule for 2018 is fully booked. We can’t wait to share everything we have on deck for the Academy this year!

Absolutely it would be better on a 5th… once you o 5th, you don’t want to mess with 3 Axis:-)

Yes, We have a ton more 5 Axis coming.

Easy to complex Aerospace 5 Axis out of Titanium.

Just like twin turret, twin spindle mill/turns, you never want to run a lathe again.
